Experience the diverse and untouched natural terrains of Canada's third largest province. With mountains, lakes, rivers, plateaus, valleys, forests, islands and coastlines, and a large variety of animals to look for, hunting in BC becomes an experience like no other. 237 Wilderness in Colorado is remote and in its rawest, wildest form. Colorado is blessed with some of the most distinct and beautiful lands in America. The Rocky Mountains that characterize this state are home to some of the best games in the country. Look for Bighorn sheep, cougar and mule deer in high grounds and ridges. Go to the water sources to find black and grizzly bears along with elk and moose. 238 The northern third of Idaho has the greatest concentration of lakes in the western part of the United States. Idaho's remote wilderness provides great hunting grounds for those who are looking for more. The longest river within a state's borders, the tallest sand dunes on the continent, large waterfalls and big game make Idaho a dreamland for those who consider themselves ambitious. 239 Montana is a state where the tradition of hunting is not only tolerated but celebrated. It has retained much of the old American frontier spirit, which adds to its appeal. Nature and wilderness is so much a part of life here that people imagine finding a simpler life will grant them intimacy with nature. The hunter is right at home in Montana whether he is on the hot trail of a mountain goat or watching a black bear from a hideout. 240 The blufflands of the Guttenberg Iowa area surround the mighty Mississippi River and provide lush forest areas and plenty of water. The tall trees and thick forests set it apart from the vast farmlands of the Hawkeye State. White-tailed deer are the primary big game animal you will find in Iowa, but their corn-fed deer grow large and there are plenty of them. Coyote are also present in great numbers and provide fun shooting when you find them. 241 Have a taste for arctic life? Hunting in Canada's Northwest Territories provides you with the opportunity to get the closest you can to the natural wildlife of the big white North. Here the moose and the caribou, the wolf and the wolverine along with many other unique animals speckle the solitude of the tundra as they wander in the snow-covered fields and forests. 242 Called the Pacific Wonderland of Nature, Oregon offers a vast array of big and small game. From the coastal range to the dense forests adorned with ancient giant red wood trees, hunting in Oregon is a feast both for the eye and for the bag. 243 Close to five million acres (2 million hectares) of Saskatchewan's land is set aside as national and provincial parkland to preserve its natural resources. Here you will find black bears and moose in high areas while deer and elk live in the lush vegetation that fills the spaces between the province's scenic water sources. 244 Many know Wyoming as the first state in outdoor America. The shimmering gold aspens call one out to the warmth of an elk camp while the allure of big game invite the hunter to stalk the endless, wide open spaces in this magnificent state for mule deer or bighorn sheep. 245 For centuries the infinite riches of the Colorado Plateau have attracted tourists, adventurers and hunters to the highs and lows of Utah. Here you can find mule deer and pronghorn in the mountains while coyotes and cougars roam the low-lying terrains in search of a prey of their own. 246 Difficulty 257 First time hunters. 258 Amateur hunters. 259 Professionals only! 260 CARIBOU 261 COUGAR 262 ELK 263 GOAT 264 GRIZZLY BEAR 265 BLACK BEAR 266 MOOSE 267 MULE DEER 268 MUSK OX 269 POLAR BEAR 270 PRONGHORN 271 RACCOON 272 ROCKY MOUNTAIN BIG HORN 273 WHITETAIL DEER 274 COYOTE 275 This tag gives you rights to hunt and take 1 coyote. A black bear's length usually ranges from about 50 to 75 inches and its weigh from 130 to 660 pounds. Female bears measure from 50 to 75 inches and weigh about 90 to 400 pounds. The bear's habitat are rather diverse. They are found in both arid and moist forests, from sea level to over 2,000 meters (6,560 feet). They are a species widely distributed throughout the forested areas of North America and can presently be found in northern Mexico, 32 states of the United States, and all the provinces and territories of Canada except Prince Edward Island. 290 Coyotes as we know are members of the dog family although they are more agile and predatory than domestic dogs. The coyote resembles a medium-sized Collie dog in size and shape, but its tail is rounder and bushier and is usually carried straight out below the level of its back. Coyotes can weigh between 15 - 45 pounds, and stand between 15 to 20 inches at the shoulder. They inhabit all living areas of the Southwest Desert, from low valleys to the heights of the mountains. They particularly like open plains, grasslands and high mesas. Although their natural habitat is said to be open grassland, they would move to wherever food is available. 291 Caribou are arctic animals. The barren ground caribou generally inhabits arctic and open tundra lands near or above timberline. While woodland caribou tend to inhabit heavily forested areas in higher elevations. These animals eat grasses, sedges and leaves. Willows and dwarf birches are also on their menu in the summer. They eat lichens (reindeer moss) and dried sedges in the winter. Males can weigh from 350 to 400 pounds and females from 175 to 225 pounds. Caribou can reach 4 - 5 feet tall at the shoulder. 292 The cougar is one of the most adaptable and agile predators, preying mainly on deer, elk, and smaller mammals. Cougars weigh between 70 - 200 pounds. They stand an average of 22 - 31 inches at the shoulder and their body lengths are mostly between 3.5 - 5 feet cougars choose a wide variety of habitats as their own including forests, grasslands, swamps, and some semi-desert areas. 293 Elks are some of the larger mammals that live in the wilderness. Mature elk bulls can average 800 to 1100 pounds and stand 5 to 5.6 feet at the shoulder while elk cows average 550 to 600 and stand 4 to 5 feet at the shoulder. Elk like to live at high elevations in semi open forests and mountain meadows near covered areas. Elk are predominantly grazers, living mostly off of upland grass. 294 Mountain goats are inhabitants of the United States and Canada. In Idaho, most goat populations are located in the central part of the state. Mountain goats are about three and a half feet tall at the shoulder, and weigh between 150 and 220 pounds. Their diet consists mainly of grass, woody plants, mosses, lichen and other vegetation. 295 Grizzly bears are one of the strongest sub-species of bear. The grizzly bear reaches weights of 300 - 1500 pounds. These bears have a characteristic appearance that is usually recognized by the large hump they have over their shoulders, which is a muscle mass used to power the forelimbs in digging. Grizzly bears are found mostly in B.C. They inhabit most areas of the province except Vancouver Island, the Queen Charlotte Islands and the lower mainland. These bears prefer semi-open grounds like countryside and usually live in the mountains. 296 Species wise moose are among the large even-toed herbivorous mammals and are the largest of the deer family. Males weigh on average over 1200 lbs while females often reach 900 lbs. Newborn calves weigh around 33 lbs but quickly increase in size and around 300 or 400 pounds by their first winter. Alaskan moose, one of the largest sub-groups of the species, hold the record for being the largest known present-day deers. One of these animals sighted in 1897 was a bull standing 7.7 feet and weighed 1800 pounds. Its RACK (or antler spread) was 78.3 inches. 297 Mule deers are one of the most commonly found animals of the cervid (deer) family. The mule deer of the Rocky Mountains is distinguished by their whitish rump patch. These grow to a height of up to 3 - 3.5 feet. Males weigh between 125 - 400 pounds, females between 100 - 150 pounds. Mule deers are fast runners. When on chase, they can reach a speed of up to 35 miles per hour. A lightning speed they can keep up for a number of minutes. For habitat, mule deer prefer coniferous forests, desert shrubs, chaparral and shrubby grasslands. In mountainous regions they migrate to higher elevations in spring and come back down in fall. They tend to follow designated trails, especially in the winter. 298 The musk ox's body is 6 and a half feet long. It weights 400 to 900 pounds and has a double layer of fur that falls out in the summer. The animal's hair is usually brown, shaggy and silky and each strand averages from 2 to 3 feet. Musk Ox can be found mostly in rough northern tundra areas. These mammals feed mainly on grass, mosses, arctic flowers, bark, berry bushes, and other tundra foliage. 299 They are the largest and strongest members of the bear species. The adult male Polar bear can grow to a weight of 550 to 1,700 lbs and measure 8 to 10 feet from nose to tail. Adult females weigh 200 to 700 lbs and measure 6 - 8 feet. The entire circumpolar Arctic region is polar bear habitat. Polar bears are equally comfortable in the water and on land. They can be found on pack ice, coastal islands, coastlines and even out in Arctic waters. These bears are exceptional swimmers and have been spotted in the sea more than 100 miles from the shore or pack ice. 300 Pronghorn are about the size of a goat. They average 35 - 41 inches tall. Males usually weigh 90 - 140 pounds while females weigh 75 - 105 pounds. Records show that Sonoran pronghorn inhabit three counties in southwestern Arizona (Yuma, Pica and Maricopa) and the northwestern part of Mexico's Sonora state. Pronghorn are also sighted in southeastern Oregon, southern Idaho, southern Alberta, southern Saskatchewan, Montana, and western North Dakota, southern Arizona, and western Texas. 302 The habitat of the Bighorn Sheep ranges from Nevada and California to west Texas and south into Mexico. Some rare groups are seen in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. The bighorn sheep weighs an average of 115 - 280 pounds, and stands at 32 - 40 inches at the shoulder. Bighorn are primarily grazers, consuming grasses, sedges, and forbs, but they are inclined to eat young twigs, leaves, and shoots when preferred food is scarce like during the winter. 303 The whitetail deer, found throughout North America, is one of the best-known and more widely recognized large mammals of the region. The adult whitetail deer's weight averages from about 100 to 350 pounds. Mature males are generally larger than the females. One of the most recognizable features of the whitetail deer are their antlers. Deer antlers usually begin growing during the month of March or April and reach their full growth as early as August or September. This isn't too surprising as deer antlers are among the fastest growing tissues known to man, growing at an average of 1 to 2 inches per week during the animal's development. 304 When you need that extra draw, the RedHead XP-32 Compound bow is the best choice. Your dad's trusty two-seven-o sits locked away in the truck, ready for the coming hunt. You take another sip of coffee, then quickly gather up the rest of your gear and head out the door. The air is crisp and cool. Morning dew settles over everything like a soft blanket woven together from a million tiny stars. The sun feels warm on your face as you toss the pack in the back seat. With a final deep breath you close the passenger door, put on your wide brimmed hat, pet your dog reassuringly and step up into the driver's seat. The key slips in smoothly. A quick flick of the wrist is rewarded with a satisfying rumble from cold engine. You press your foot gently on the accelerator, the truck lurches forward eager to unleash its power. The driveway is short and made of gravel, crunching under the tires as they pass. There is no traffic this early as you turn on to the paved country road.
