Almost all other parts are either contained in or on the engine block. The block is where the bore, stroke and number of cylinders is defined. Bore defines the diameter of the hole that the pistons will travel in. It is measured in inches. Stroke is the length of the travel of the piston. It is measured in inches. Number of cylinders is the number of pistons found in the block. The value can range from 1 to 12. The total displacement of the engine is calculated from these three settings and is displayed in cubic inched of displacement (CID). Pistons/Head The piston and head selections define the shape and design of the piston crowns and the cylinder heads. The shape and design of the piston top and cylinder head can have dramatic effects on the way the fuel combusts within the chamber. The compression ratio is directly related to the design of the block, piston and cylinder heads. The compression ratio is a comparison to the volume in the cylinder when the piston is at its lowest point (BDC) to the compressed volume at the top of the stroke. The bore, stroke and the space between the piston and the cylinder head help define this compressed space.
