Usually, the ideal situation is to have the load of the tyre spread evenly across its width. This will give optimum grip and tyre wear. When the pressures are set correctly, the temperature of the rubber will be even across the width of the tyre. Over inflating a tyre will increase tyre wear and produce less grip, but will reduce the rolling resistance of the tyre, which will result in a higher top speed. The spring rates are the 'stiffness' of the springs in the suspension. The springs need to support the weight of the car under full cornering and aerodynamic loads. If you set the springs too soft you may suffer too much body roll or even ground the car under cornering or aerodynamic loads. Stiffer springs tend to increase the stability of the car, but could make it skittish and difficult to handle over bumps. The task of the dampers is to eliminate oscillations in the springs. They do this by producing a force that opposes the movement of the suspension. They can be adjusted for both the compression of the suspension (bump) and the relaxing of the suspension (rebound). Setting the dampers too hard in the bump (up) direction on a bumpy track could cause the wheel to leave the ground. Setting them too soft could lead to undesirable oscillations. Ride height affects both drag and downforce. If the ride height is set high the overall effect of drag will be reduced, but so will the total amount of downforce produced by the car. Setting the height too low, however, will cause the car to 'ground out' (the underside of the car will physically hit the road), and thus de-stabilise the whole car. Adjusting the ride height will have knock-on effects on all of the car's suspension settings. An IndyCar™ Series gearbox has six forward gears. The first three gears are considered 'restart gears' and are usually set for good acceleration out of the pits. Fourth gear is normally for passing when backed up by slow traffic. The top gears are usually very closely set, with most teams only using sixth gear when in the draft of a car in front. Getting the gear ratios set correctly for each track is essential and can spell the difference between winning or being a back marker. Camber is used to maximise and adjust the contact patch of the tyre. By turning a few laps around a track and then comparing temperatures across each tyre, adjusting the cambers at each wheel can improve grip and reduce tyre degradation. If the tyres on the right side of the car are hotter on the outside edge, then those wheels will benefit from more negative camber. The opposite is true for the left side of the car. The idea is to spread the load as evenly as possible across each tyre. Toe-in has the effect of pulling the car back into a straight line when it experiences a disrupting force such as a bump or gust of wind. Slightly increasing toe-in can help to cure a car that is skittish or unstable on the straights. An increase in toe-in also increases scrub (road friction) on the front tyres which can help to generate heat and improve grip. Decreasing toe-in can improve the cornering of the car. The wings on an IndyCar™ Series car produce downforce and therefore extra grip. The side effect of increased wing angle is drag and lower top speeds. You can adjust the balance of front/rear wing to correct understeer or oversteer. On some tracks, the cars generate enough downforce from the aerodynamics of the chassis alone, and can therefore run flat out with the wings set to their minimum. Qualify for a race in pole position.
