The Rock is an aspiring shark, who's learning to swim in the Garage. She may look innocent enough, but she's got the most solid stance and bridge in here. She shoots well for a beginner and sports a nice cue. Rocker is another easy beginning competitor. He's been described in the neighborhood as intense. Spending most of his money on his band, he usually sticks with safe bets. Dank's not the sharpest dresser in the garage, but he does have his style. He's been playing pool for about 6 months now, so he's just starting to grasp the game. Watch out though, he does have a few tricks up his sleeve. Albinario shows little emotion while playing, whether he's winning or losing. Probably the best sport in the Garage, he'll play anybody for cash, and say 'thanks' graciously as you hand him your money. Roadrage has the most expensive cue in the Garage, but having the best cue doesn't always put you on top. Don't aggravate him while he's shooting as he's got a temper. The Prodigy's been shooting pool since she was old enough to see over the edge of a table. She sneaks out at night to come down to the Garage. Her bets are low, because she babysits to get the money. She's good though, so you better have brought her some lunch money. Mario is an average player. He's been known to tirade about a particular ball that's tied up, even though he's got four easy shot opportunities. He's got a fast car and he drives it fast and furious, hence the nickname. Lightning Rod shoots fast and hard. Concentration and finesse aren't words in his vocabulary. As a result he's a good straight shooter, but he's not great at thin cut or touch shots. While waiting for her games, Ginger's been known to get carried away and dance on chairs. The Garage players haven't decided if this is a distraction tactic she uses, or if she's just seriously happy. The Professor claims he's got a Ph.D. in Pool. He knows a lot about the game and endlessly spouts statistical trivia tid-bits to explain how he should be a successful player. "I can run out from here 8 out of 10 times..." Surfin' San gets to the garage to play once it's too dark to keep surfing. Her upper body strength from paddling gives her the meanest break in the Garage. Small Fry may look small and young, but she plays a mean game of pool. Normally someone has to pick her up to help her take shots, but she handles the cue just fine. She doesn't have a lot of cash, but enjoys the game. Jaws goes around telling everyone at the garage that he's friends with Curly. Everyone just laughs, but they're beginning to suspect he may be telling the truth, he's improving way too fast. Stash and his wife are regulars at the Garage. They come down at least once a week for some action. Stash always manages to squirrel away money from his wife to cover his bets, thus the name. Frenchy is a French foreign exchange student staying with the LaRoche family. They tried to tell her it was customary to baby sit for people you're staying with. She didn't go for it. So she tags along and learns American garage pool culture. Buzzsaw is a decent player relatively speaking. He doesn't have his own cue yet, but he wields a mean house cue. He's a fairly aggressive gambler and can be caught off guard. Speed has some serious control over high velocity shots. She also controls the money in her family, so she bets far higher than Stash, her husband. She occasionally bets low, just in case he's watching her play. Bode's not a bad pool player, he's just a little naive. He grew up in a small town called Bode, Iowa so everybody calls him Bode. Bode's got some cash and isn't afraid to bet. The Banker's nickname comes from her preference for bank shots. This does not help her as she does not have much game but she will get a bank shot to fall once in a while. Big T's nickname comes from his big imagination, and his big temper. Growing up, Big T played some football and did lifeguard duty, this gives him a good mix of strength and finesse. In truth, most Garage players are afraid to beat him and dethrone him from his 'King of the Garage' title. 'Biceps' is the muscle of the Hawg Pen bosses gang. He's smiling at you now, thinking about how much easier it would be to pick you up, turn you upside down, and shake the change out of your pockets, rather than actually win it playing pool. Dude is one of the best players that hangs out at the Pen. Win or lose, he just nods his head and says 'cool, dude'. Decoy is the house's favorite. She sometimes waits tables for them, and plays for free at the bar. Her 'look' doesn't exactly fit in at the Pen, so tough guy bikers are easy suckers for her. When they try to bully her to get their money back, the bouncers step in. 'The Rabbit' is known for bragging about his jump shots. He has also been known to do a rabbit victory hop when he wins. Don't be shocked if a safety turns into an opportunity for him. Raw Dawg recently starred on the syndicated TV show 'The Nation's Most Favorite Wanted Criminals'. The rest of his gang are considering calling in to the TV show to get the reward, as he probably owes them the money from welching on bets. Rock On starts and ends each match with the international horned-hand symbol for rock on!! The Pen plays Rock On's type of music, and he has paid off house debts by bringing down his band and performing live. Dano's spent many years hanging out at the Hawg Pen. He's originally from Chicago and hasn't missed a Bears game in 20 years. He claims his dad named him after a Hawaiian TV character, but nobody believes him. Sooth Sayer always predicts that "Today, I will play like a champion!". Nobody believes him because his pool game is no better than his prophecy. Low-Tech is the mechanic of the gang. He happily works on most of the bikes for the players at the Pen. So, he gets backed easily, and bets high because of it. Lightspeed takes his time measuring up his shots, and has been late to some of his matches. Luckily, keeping exact appointments at the Hawg Pen isn't such a big deal to the other players at this level. Wormy sells bait in the morning down at the county lake. He comes to the Pen to stay up at night until his shift at 4:30am. As you can imagine a bait salesman isn't exactly flooded with riches. Don't count on him carrying lots of cash. Originally from Las Vegas, the "Rose" hitch-hiked into town a few months ago, and hasn't left since. As one of the only female players at the bar, the "Rose" gets her choice of table. She's got money to bet, because the house doesn't charge her for drinks. Skytalker says his nickname came from an ancient Indian tribe, but everyone in the Hawg Pen thinks it came from his obsession with SciFi movies. He's gotten pretty good in his game. Skytalker likes to break apart clusters if there's no better shot. Rough Rider is married to Leather Lena. He gets his name from the rough rides he likes to take, like the Mexico to Canada run. The Hawg group thinks he's 'rough around the edges'... the edges of the pool table. Leather Lena travels on the road with her hubby, Rough Rider, riding their bike and writing for websites. She brings a special leather outfit on the road with her, just in case they decide to step out for a night at the local biker bar to shoot some pool. If you wanna play this guy, you need to show up between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. He posts his times right on the garage refrigerator. If it's 5 o'clock and you're in the middle of a game, he's out the door, regardless of who's winning or losing. Brilliant is a Brit. He uses the word 'brilliant' constantly, and it thus landed him the nickname. You make your shot...it's 'brilliant', you miss your shot, and that's 'brilliant', he makes his shot or misses it and that's 'brilliant'. You get the idea. He, however, is not a 'brilliant' player. The Pinball Wizard grew up on pinball, and dominated his local arcade. Kids putting their quarters up in expectation of getting the 'next game' were sorely disappointed, as they waited for hours. All that finger and eye control paid off, because the 'Wiz' shoots a mean long shot. Nightrain Lane is the best player in the Hawg Pen. He earned his nickname from being able to play through an entire night and keep going through the next day as if he'd had 8 hours of sleep. Nightrain could play in the amateur circuits, but won't because there is easy money at the Pen. Squidmon owns the Pit Stop. He's practically the best player there, but because it'd be all over town in a few nights, he 'lays low', and saves his 'real' game for special opponents from out of town. He'd rather make most of his money from backing other players. Tattooz is the local tattooist, and likes the Pit Stop, because she can meet clients. She figures even if she loses a few games, if she can talk enough people into getting tattoos, she's still ahead, and gets to play a full night of pool. Diddly42 is originally from the deep South of Alabama. He's a commercial trucker, and plays all along his routes. The Pit Stop is one of his usual watering holes. He lives to drive, and supplements his income by playing pool at night. We don't ask about the 'Diddly' nor the '42'... After losing a bet to another player, Glass eye had to swallow a marble. Everyone rolled on the floor laughing when he gulped it down, and just as it set in that something wasn't right, ol' 'One-Eyed Jackson' came running out of the bathroom screaming... 'WHO STOLE MY EYE?' Gizmo is a solid player who can manufacture a shot when there is none. Gizmo's nickname is an acronym for 'Gives me mo money.' And that's what you may do if you play him. He plays good, has a nice cue, and usually has cash. Dealer Don worked in Vegas, but thought he could make a living in a hall. He's a seriously accurate player, but can't keep up his accuracy in a crowded pool hall like the Pit Stop. When he's not choking, he's a sharp shooter. The "Super Chicken" nickname comes from his bony little legs and also his habit of shooting with quick jerky movements. He hardly thinks about his shots before taking them, making him not very accurate. He has a wide variety of shots in his repertoire. No one will say how Cannibal got his nickname. He says it was for how the pockets gobble up the balls after he shoots. He thinks he's fierce competition, but you stand a good chance of coming out on top with this guy. Fritz can hit very long shots accurately. His short shots however aren't as refined. He doesn't wear any eye-correction, even though everyone tells him that he has to be far-sighted to be making most of his long shots and missing so many short ones. Ace gave herself this nickname in the hopes it'd make her shoot better pool. In time she may actually live up to the nickname, but she's got some serious work ahead of her. Red is originally from England and claims to be in the US, because soccer is 'really picking up in the states'. His nickname, Red, comes from his fanaticism for the sport, claiming he used to scream until he was red in the face. Straight Shooter is an ex-Marine out of Camp Pendelton. The Corps gave him discipline, self-respect, and enough time off to become excellent at pool. He's one of the toughest competitors in the Pit Stop. Green Thumbs has a flashy way of counting his money. Before and after matches, he 'thumbs' through the money and stuffs it inside pockets in his 'green' jacket. His thumbs are 'green' because he's good, and he counts his money often. Racer Rona was once married to a stock car racer and spent her time in the pool halls while her husband was running laps. Racer got her nickname because she talks fast, plays fast, and can empty out your pockets in a New York minute! Shaq is part of another pool-playing married duo on the local circuit. He's got excellent control of his follow on shots, but very little control over his ability to draw. Shaq's a Brit and he's fond of his nickname. Zwylle will cost you a 'pretty penny' if you play against her and lose. She's married to Shaq but she's a better player, so she handles the larger bets. JazzyZ got his name from playing sax in a jazz band. He has excellent control of his arms, his fingers and especially his mind. He's always looking for new opportunities to 'practice his arts' and he's got kick shots down. Patrice is good at breaking up the clusters, and playing things safely. She bets low and safe, and she plays shape with the shortest cue ball path. She's not afraid to blatantly spoil your shot by burying the cue ball in a cluster. Everything about the Little Tiger is big but her size. She shoots an incredible game. She cuts up the angles and banks like she has claws of a tiger. Her pricey bets are the teeth to finish the job. When Froth starts to win a game, he begins to foam on both sides of his mouth. He just gets so incredibly excited, he can't help himself. The frothing probably works to his advantage though, since it's difficult to concentrate when your opponent is frothing. Talking Tina is true to her name. She has a thousand stories that she tells opponents during the games. It's quite distracting. Her only problem is, if you can get a word in edge wise, she's even more intrigued by your stories and will definitely be distracted from her shots. Slopasaurus is the quiet guy in the corner kicking back with a drink. He's been known to slop in a ball here and there. Slop's theory on bank shots? Hit it hard, it's gotta go in somewhere! He was once an activities director on a cruise ship, where he made one of the main activities playing pool. The man known as 'The Hammer' got the nickname because he's got a monster break and loves hitting the balls hard. The Fixer is a finesse player. He is strong using draw, follow, and english. He earned the name 'Fixer' by being able to fix apparently bad situations on the table with a few decent tactical shots. The Brit is an excellent player with an excellent cue stick at this level of play. Originally from England he sees billiard and carom shots more often, and hits them more accurately. The Jester takes very little seriously, including his games. Playing practical jokes is what he does best, next to playing pool. He can afford to be careless. Hmmmm, whoever said women weren't good at math doesn't know Hmmmm. She has more understanding of angles than most of the guys in this club. Banks are her bag. Nobody really knows what her nickname means. Midas, as in everything he touches turns to gold. Midas is a corporate executive recruiter by day, and hustler by night. He bets high, because he can afford to lose. The Gypsy wanders the country further than most players, rarely staying more than a couple of days at a time. He does not have time to get a feel for the regular players or the tables, so his game is not his best. The Laser originally got his skills from playing in the hamburger joints of Isla Vista, California, while his friends were studying at the University. He's known as the Laser because he hits shots from across the table with big time accuracy. A lot of felt doesn't scare him. Ex-Army Ranger, Pete doesn't go for fancy nicknames. He's also a simple player. About average on the bets, and about average skill level. Fair Banks spent time on the Alaskan circuit where she grew up. She ranked in the top 10, but it sounds more impressive than it is - there only seems to be 12 female pool players in the state! Too Thick is an excellent player from Florida. He ruled as Dade County High School Division 9-ball champion for his entire high school career. His only flaw is a tendency to shoot very hard, causing balls to bounce out of the pocket. Master of the combinations and kick shots, Action is known for his 'action' on the tables. He's also known for his other 'action'...betting BIG. 'Dreamy' earned her nickname from daydreaming during games. Trained by 'Action' she's often thinking of his instructions during the games. Watch your wallet, fellas. Lag's a part-time painter and part-time pool player. The Lag got his name from being able to lag extremely well. He's excellent at banks, and anything involving rail hits. Helicopter is good at jump and masse shots. He's known as the Helicopter because he's got the cue stick above the cue so often and he loves waving it around. The Shadow likes to follow people around the pool hall until they finally play him, which is why they call him The Shadow. The Shadow is gifted with an ability to act in addition to shooting pool. Sometimes he comes in makeup after a show...wonder which show he just came from? The Shank is fairly new to Deep Pockets, but he's made an impression! He's involved in all of the big money games and decisions going on here. He likes to take money from The Jaguar. He gets his name from playing golf... guess he decided to try a new sport. Kiko is a foreign exchange student from Japan. She claims to have never played pool in her 'homeland' but it's apparent that either she's a natural or someone's getting her hustle goin'. One-Run is known for the one and only time he ran a table at Deep Pockets. No one's forgotten his amazing feat, mainly because he tells the story at least once per night after a few drinks and a few losses. Safari Sam is always talking about his safari days and how he used to hunt wild beasts. Nowadays he hunts down a different prey - rookies with fat wallets. Sandy Beach is a scuba instructor by day, hustler by night. Her eyes are usually red from chlorine in the practice pool at the scuba shop. She's got a good mental state from the diving, so her shots are always relaxed and she rarely chokes or is distracted. Chimpie used to be an operative. Chimpie was his code name. While sitting around at Langley, Virginia trying to figure out what to do with their free time, the agents played a lot of pool. He's easily distracted by talking politics, and claims that the only safe shot is a good offensive shot. Hot Rodriguez is a great player. He's a California native, and does well when he's playing in Southern California on his turf. He's got control over the high velocity shots and generally is accurate at a medium range between the cue and the object ball. Originally from Brooklyn, Diggler moved from Flatbush to Atlantic City to Chicago to Las Vegas and now to California. If you can't pay your bets with him, he'll be charging you a lot of interest. Deralte Fritz is a solid player, and getting better every day. He carries a lot of money and really likes the action. He's worked his way up from the Hawg Pen a few weeks ago and has cleaned up his image for Deep Pockets. So watch out, he plays like a machine when he's mad. Cash inherited a lot of money and keeps his bet high to intimidate the less wealthy. He doesn't realize that after you 'put up' you've got to 'shut up' and play. He's got a decent game, but don't let the big bucks scare you. Keep your eye on the prize. Killuminati-UK is called just 'kill-um', because he's a pest exterminator. The bug killing business is slow during the winter so he has lots of time to practice his game. Joey Love was in one of the boy bands of the late 90's. The tough guys at Deep Pockets aren't gonna let him live it down, and keep his band nickname 'Joey Love' alive and well. He's easily distracted by it though, so he occasionally chokes when some of the guys are hassling him. Snooze Hughes travels from hall to hall studying the sociological causes and effects of the pool scene and playing pool. Or at least he says. He's already cleaned out a few clubs in town, and rumor has it that all he's been studying is the color of other people's money. He handles the money for Deep Pockets, so he has a vested interest in being the best. When he shoots he thinks about how his stance would look as a photograph. He's stopped shots, fixed three or four hairs in a mirror, and gone back to the shot. His game is 1/2 psychology, and it works. One-Pocket's the current Mojave Grand National Amateur one pocket champion. His reputation means he can't get much action playing one pocket. Luckily for him, his skills definitely transfer over to 8 and 9-ball. Peppy learned to shoot pool in the halls of Spanish Harlem. She made enough winnings in the Hudson Amateur 9-ball tournament to jump on a bus and make the trek out to California. After the trip she doesn't have a lot of money, so her bets will be low at this level. Wrecking Ball grew up in the pool bars in East Los Angeles. He's obviously an excellent player to be at Hard Times, but he struggles when balls get clustered. He will often shoot to break 'em up and get out of position. 'Rusty' was excellent at pool, but now he's a little out of touch with the game. He's good at his angles and banks, but in general he's not playing his best because he's having problems focusing, due to the anti-smoking laws in California. The Bod is known for his aggressiveness at the pool table. If he can create a chain reaction he can drain a lot of 9 balls early. You'll know he's here by the swooning and sighing of the ladies around his table. The Ringmaster got her name because of her ability to control a table with safeties. A minister's daughter originally from Nashville, Tennessee, she ran into trouble once her father found out she spent every day but Sunday in a pool-hall. He's originally from Oregon, where he conquered Salem and Portland to the point he had to move if he still wanted to find fresh players who didn't know of him yet. Pops is thought to be a relic of the 20's. Although his real age isn't known, he talks about the 'good old days' when you had to walk miles in the snow uphill both ways to get to the halls. His skills have aged like a fine wine. He's the most experienced player in the room, and it shows. Magic Wolf got his nickname from his incredible ability to make the balls disappear from the table. Like a wolf, he's not afraid to take anyone on. He's a big guy who breaks hard and plays with passion. The Deal Maker is a backer who loves setting up bets. He's usually a rail bird, but occasionally he plays. When he plays, he's competitive and bets high to scare away non-serious players. NM Shooter has long been competing in the local tournaments. He hails from New Mexico, but nowadays he hangs mostly in the Inland Empire of Southern California. He can shoot the lights out on the pool table on any given night. Heavy Impact grew up in the projects of Philly. He worked at a pizza parlor every day after school, and would practice on the single quarter table after the doors closed at night. The city dried up for him, and he's made his way west city by city. Mojo is about as flamboyant as they get. Loud, rude, obnoxious, and very good at pool. You'd better have lots of cash if you plan on playing him, and ask for a big spot. NSWAR's parents were hippie protestors in the 60's and were so anti-war, they named their son NSWAR, which stood for 'No Stinking War!'. He's got some excellent masse and kick shots that even a table pounding and snap of the fingers couldn't make happen. One-ear Ernie is deaf in one ear. The problem is that he uses it as an excuse sometimes to selectively not hear someone call their pocket, claiming 'oh sorry that was my bad ear'. His tactic is to wear you down, so eventually you just get so frustrated that you lose your concentration. The Jaguar is originally from Manilla. He's a big gambler, and is on the constant search for a hall with big money to win. He's similar to the big cat of the same name, because once he finds a victim, he pounces. The Shank is one of his favorite 'victims'. The Programmer is a video game programmer so he thinks he knows everything and he's probably right. Like most engineers, he does not bet much and plays better when the bet is not very high. Swizzle is one of the more nicely dressed players at Hard Times. Swizzle got his nickname from the little 'swizzle' the balls perform when he uses english on 'em. Ladyhawk may look cute and cuddly, but looks are deceptive. The 'hawk' in her makes her a top quality player, with excellent angle cutting ability, combination shots, banks and english. She's really good and bets appropriately high. Nugget's an excellent player at Hard Times. He's got kick and masse shots down pat, and has a tendency to move the ball down the shot lines well. Rumor has it his name comes from converting his winnings to gold nuggets. Makadoo got his nickname from Mark Can Do. He can do just about anything with the cue ball. If you don't learn anything playing him, ask for a lesson. He is a great instructor. Tall Steve Chaplin dominates the 8-ball and 9-ball competition at Hard Times. Steve stands 6'7 and stares down at you as he takes your money with a smile. Not the easiest game in town. Slow Roll's got a nice cue stick. He plays Jam Up and knows all the moves. He'll only play for big stakes and he has a lot of heart so he won't quit until he's broke. Show up with your best game and keep your composure or Curly will empty your wallet.
